Join Petra’s class & learn the joys of Pokemon Go.

If you think playing Pokémon is not for you, think again: It’s a HUGE Fountain of Youth: It can be as simple or complicated as you want it to be. Keep fit, keep body and brain activity, have fun, learn something new. Master new technology – just need a good smartphone. Technical assistance will be available.

Please note: These classes are free for U3A members. To join U3A, the fee is $15 for the remainder of 2024.

Pokemon Go is a HUGE Fountain of Youth:

Pokemon are everywhere in our digital world and they’re fun to catch and collect …….. and best of all – it’s free to play. It’s just like stamp collecting – you get an album to fill with your catches, some common some very rare.

It can be as simple or complicated as you want it to be.

  • Keeping fit: encourages you to walk:
    • Catching Pokemons enroute
    • Spinning Pokestops and Gym discs to collect balls, potions and other items
    • Hatching eggs
    • Walking with your Buddy
    • Walking routes to collect Zygarde cells
    • Exploring new areas to find remote Gyms and Pokestops
  • Keeping brain active:
    • developing strategies for achieving tasks, battles, levelling up
    • Being a collector – fill your Pokedex (album) with many unique Pokemon
    • Collecting series or families of Pokemon:
      • Vivillion (butterfly collection – 14 plus 2 special)
      • Tandemaus/Maushaus
    • Battling in raids, gyms, Power Spots
    • Battling in Go Battle League
    • Pokestop Showcases
  • Having fun:
    • The thrill of the chase – you always remember your first catch of any rare Pokemon – how you spotted it, where it was, what you were wearing (pyjamas?), what you went through to find it, etc
    • Pokemon are funny: Lickitung, Gloom, Oinkologne, etc. Have funny names – Ekans (Snake) Arbok (Cobra)
    • The excitement of catching a very special Pokemon – shiny, hundo, nundo,
  • Social interaction: connecting with the local Pokemon Raid Group:
    • people of all ages play and get together for community days, special raids, trading, and having fun together
    • there’s lots of support
    • a sounding board for questions, strategies
    • cheering squad for capturing special/rare Pokemon
    • connecting and befriending overseas trainers to exchange gifts and receive special eggs
  • Learning new stuff:
    • As your skills grow, the game evolves with you
    • How to use technology to achieve your goals
  • Sense of achievement:
    • Completing daily, special and event-focused tasks
    • Achieving special Pokemon such as PHD Pikachu, fully formed Zygarde – some take months
    • Finding regional Pokemon from other countries
    • Finding a special shiny
  • Using technology:
    • Researching Pokemon stats
    • Researching how to achieve victory over Cliff, Sienna, Arlo and Giovanni
    • Connecting with local and overseas friends
    • Where to find information
  • Totally free to play
    • just need a good smart-phone
    • You can pay money if you wish for raid passes, tickets to events, etc but this is not necessary
